More Brush Drawings
My experience with the Pentel Pocket Brush pen (highly recommended, by the way) has led me to try drawing with an honest-to-goodness sable brush. Specifically, the Series 7 sable brushes from Windsor & Newton. My lines don't quite have the polish of a Jeff Smith or Charles Burns, but already they are more expressive than what I ever got from my Microns. Besides, despite the initial difficulty in use, inking in brush is great fun. I'm using brush sizes 0, 2 and 3 on vellum bristol board from Bee. I like the tooth of this paper better than the Strathmore 300 series that has recently seemed to drop in quality. This set includes head studies for a character in Journeymen as well as a hero pose from one of the leads. Also, I've added a random sketch where I tried my hand at a wash for shading. And again no--not quite the polish of a Jeff Smith or Charles Burns. But I'll get there. Enjoy.

We are the robots...
"...We're functioning automatic,
and we are dancing mechanic!"
-Kraftwerk
These shiny happy little guys were done for a create-a-card set put out by Mudpuppy. When they contacted me to do this project and design a bunch of my own robots, i said "affirmative!"... that's robot speak for "yes". If anyone is interested in getting a set of these guys check out the Mudpuppy site.

... and Break Your Goddamn Spine!
Not sure if it is because Arnold has been in the news for his "10 year discrepancy" or not but there sure have been a lot of his movies on TV lately. I saw Total Recall the other day and this past weekend was The Running Man. I sure miss those movie days of his... And if you haven't seen The Running Man, i highly recommend it. Depicted here is Ben Richards in all of his spandex uni-tard glory!

You never know ...
A few weeks back, I posted art that I'd done for Ms. Pat, the retiring bus-driver trainer hereabouts.
Well, last week, the local paper did an article about her. I couldn't find the story archived online, so I did a quick scan:
I couldn't attend the ROAD-E-O, so I never saw her reaction to the picture until I saw the photo. I gotta say: That's priceless!

Philadelphia Cartoonist Society Shirts, etc. available now on Cafe Press
I know Cafe Press is a bit pricier than when I do a print run from a local shop, but if you ever need a quick t-shirt with the PCS logo, you can always find one at my Cafe Press store. All of the images I uploaded to the site are high resolution, and folks who use Cafe Press told me their output quality is very good.
Over the years, a lot of people have asked me about older t-shirts I've designed. It's hard not to lose money when you make a second run of shirts (unless you you a lot of people pre-order). Also folks have asked me for sizes I didn't have. So I figured this was a place they could always come to if I didn't have any on hand. If interested, please click the link below:

Hobo Day Photos - 2011
I hope that some of the folks' drawings will pop up here soon. In the meantimes, we will have to enjoy the memories of these Iphone photos Sam Heimer took. Thanks to all the folks who came out. Mostly it was awesome mixing it up, drawing, and BBQing with a bunch of great people. Thanx, Chris Stevens and John and all the gracious folks at Locust Moon out in Wild West Philly. Unfortunately, we witnessed two very sad moments on the el train, but it didn't seem to sour the overall spirit of the day and the crew. It was a very unique and lively experience to say the least. We were kinda like a peaceful version of "The Warriors" (except nobody was wasting nobody).
My main man Chris - in spite of the fact that his headphones had devil horns on them, I am pretty sure I heard Barry Manilow coming from his Ipod. You can see some of Chris' work here: http://chrisdowling.deviantart.com/.
BBQing back at Locust Moon's "Hobo Jungle". I was showing Chris Stevens my secret recipe to opening a bag of ice.

Three Cheers...
...and a big 'thank-you' to Jeffro Kilpatrick for setting up PCS Hobo Day. I'll leave the telling of the day to somebody else, but an incredible day it was. Riding the rails and doodling was a blast, as was getting to catch up with old PCS members and meeting new members. The food as always, was top notch culinary hoboery. I'm still licking Jeff's barbecue sauce out of my mustache. As an added bonus we received free instruction on parenting and a demonstration on how Septa needs better protocol when dealing with mental health issues. This was a memorable day, and again, thanks to Jeff and the crew at Locust Moon for making all this possible!

Excited About Hobo Day this Saturday!
I am really excited about PCS Hobo Day this Saturday, June 4th. A bunch of us will meeting at the Spring Garden El stop at 2pm. For more info go here. I love seeing Jeff's drawings from his favorite Hobo movie and comic project. It got me thinking...Be sure to bring some work with you on Saturday. Don't bog yourself down with a bunch of stuff. But it would be great to look over folks art at Locust Moon later in the day. Be sure to send Jeffro an e-mail if you plan on attending so we can get a head count. See you all on Saturday!
Above: Not many people know this but our own Melissa Lomax's great, great grandmother was famous hobo actress "Box Car" Birdie. Birdie starred in such films as "The Happiest Hobo" and "Box Car goes to the Circus".

In honor of Saturday's Upcoming Hobo Day...
I wanted to post drawings from the greatest hobo movie of all time - "The Emperor of the North Pole". Ernest Borgnine plays the tyrannical train conductor whose name is feared far and wide along the rails - the deplorable, the despicable, the hobo killing "SHACK":And Lee Marvin plays the tough-as-nails hobo "A NUMBER ONE":

Quizzo with Rob!
Good friend and proud supporter of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society, Rob LeFevre, of Brave New Worlds Comic Shop in Olde City is now the new king of Quizzo! Rob is now hosting the weekly pub quiz at National Mechanics every Wednesday from 8pm until 10pm.
He stated that "I'll have plenty of questions that have a nerdy bent and there's even a music round for those who are audiologically (I made this word up) inclined."
That sounds like a challenge?
If you are in the area be sure to drop in and test your brain sauce. Also, I think there is a dire need for a PCS Quizzo Team! If you are interested please post here and we can make plans to kick butt next week!
