Sean "Mr. G" Spotlighted on TheFeast.Com!

Click here to watch a Feast.com video focusing on Sean "Mr. G" and his sign-painting business. Sean has been lighting the city up lately with work for the Arrow Swim Club, Union Transfer, the Milkcrate Cafe and several other spots around Philly.

Sean is one hell of an illustrator and painter. It's great to see him getting the recognition he deserves!

Jeffro's Jabba's Palace Fan Art

Think I've finally got Star Wars out of my system for a while. While finishing this drawing last week, I had Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi playing on my computer. It was neat visiting those movies, like seeing an old friend. It's been a really long time since I've watched any Star Wars movies. I forgot what a big part of my childhood it was, how huge those movies were.

This cartoon has all my favorite action figures from this movie from when I was a kid - except for the slave girl (I don't think they made a toy for her back then). I don't know if I will be able to use this drawing for anything. I just really wanted to finish it, since I also did one of the Mos Eisley Cantina creatures from the first Star Wars movie.

DC's Problem with its Super-Heroines

2011-09-26-math

Some friends sent me this terrific article concerning the depiction of women in (some) mainstream comic books. DC Comics, in particular. Well worth your time: http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/09/22/starfire-catwoman-sex-superheroine/

The comic strip above, by the way, is from David Willis's excellent webcomic Shortpacked! Read that here: http://www.shortpacked.com/

I should have Poets updates, (color pages, finally!), later this week. And that's all from me.

Cheers.

Jeffro's Rushmore themed shirt on RIPT Apparel - Monday Sept. 19 - One Day Only

On Monday, September 19, I will have a shirt released on the RIPT Apparel website. The shirt is a tribute to one of my favorite movies “Rushmore”. You can visit the site by CLICKING HERE. RIPT also makes their apparel in hoddies, kids' sizes, and baby onesies too.

Rushmore has some great subtle humor and dry wit. It’s still hands-down my favorite Wes Anderson movie, and always makes me laugh every time I watch it. If you have seen it, you probably get the jokes incorporated into the shirt design. I tried to incorporate some signature visual elements from the film, like the colors of the Rushmore Academy uniform, Max Fischer’s glasses and beret, and the style of lettering from the signage on the school’s fence. I threw all this stuff into a drawing with Mount Rushmore (which actually has nothing to do with the film except the name of the school) and used the words “Sic Transit Gloria”, the only Latin that Max knows and uses to try and pick up a teacher.

Rushmore is a great “Back to School” movie, and one of Bill Murray’s best performances. If you haven’t seen it, you ought to check it out.

Hold the pickles...

This is my piece for the upcoming Gallery 1988 Old School Video Game Show opening Friday, September 16th. I decided to do a faux vintage advertisment inspired by the 1982 arcade game Burger Time. It was one of my favorite games growing up, I remember in the 80's having a handheld version put out by Mattel and playing it for hours...

Title: "A great BURGER is great any TIME!"
giclee print on archival paper
Size: 11"x17" •
Edition: 45

Show opens Friday, September 16th • 7-10 pm and runs til October 8th.

Down at the Barcade...

This is my submission to Gallery 1988's "Old School Video Game Art Show", taking place this Friday, September 16th at:
Gallery 1988: Venice
214 Pier Avenue
Santa Monica, CA 90405
http://nineteeneightyeight.com/

I decided to try and show what video game characters might do after a long hard day of fighting off a gorilla, chasing after a hungry yellow sphere, our endlessly pouring beers for thirsty customers (bartenders are never off-duty...). This was done using Micron ink pens and Prismacolor markers. The original piece and a very small edition of prints will be available at the show, and on the gallery's website the day after the show.

Old Bob & Barbara's Art/Benefit for Howard Candie

I was going through my files these past few days and found a lot of old stuff. I have posted on here many times about my love of Bob & Barbara's at 15th & South. The place has always been a neighborhood bar that Center City grew up around. The place precedes the gentrification of that area, and has been run like a neighborhood bar with affordable drinks for decades.

I don't spend nearly as much time there as I used to. But I still feel awfully welcome when I walk in the door. The bike messengers and hipsters may not know me. Neither do the kids who pack the place on the weekends, but the barkeeps and the locals do. I will always feel comfortable sitting and drawing cartoons at that bar. I found this piece from 2001 that was drawn at the bar while rocking cans of Pabst and shots of Jim Beam:

It was a flier for the bar. Frank, the manager at the time (and the guy responsible for scoring most of that vintage PBR swag way back when) wanted to do something nice to pay pack the bar's steady patrons. So he created "The Big Payback", a weekly event where he brought in free home cooked food. Sadly, the event started to draw a lot of starving addicts who popped out of the woodwork and disturbed steady patrons. So the Big Payback was a short-lived event in Bob & Barbara's history. But it was great that Frankie wanted to do that for his customers. Bob & Barbara's has always been diverse and experimental with their nightly events, from Bingo to Ping Pong to Pictionary to the Drag Show to live Jazz every week.

Above is a photo I took back around 2001 or 2002. I've sung the praises of Nate Wiley & the Crowd Pleasers many many times. They are my heroes. Nate and Cliff have passed, but Howard Candie, the greatest organist the band ever had, is still around. Lately, he has been having some health problems. So once again, Bob & Barbara's Lounge is giving back. Tonight, September 14, from 8 PM to 11 PM, there will be a fundraiser to help Howard and his family with their medical bills. Anyone who has ever heard Howard play has been amazed. He makes that Hammond B-3 shake the room like no other. If you know Howard's music, please come out and help him and his family out. They're great folks.

If you've never heard Howard, you can CLICK HERE to hear him on this documentary short made by local filmmaker Jim McGorman.

So be sure to pass the info on to all your Dr. Who fan friends and have pop on over to TeeFury.com to pick one up tomorrow SEPTEMBER 12th cause after that it's gone for good...unless of course you have a TARDIS then you can travel back in time and...

Ruckus!

At the end of last year I was hired to do some illustrations for a card game called Ruckus released by the company Imagination Games, It was a really of fun project to work on and I had a lot of creative freedom with the designs of the different characters. The game should be hitting stores sometime this month so keep an eye out for it...

And here's some of the characters I designed for the game...

COMIX SHIT

So, i've been working on a comic project in my spare time. This is my first attempt at something like this since 10th grade so it's been something of an adventure. Above are a few marker studies, the very top is a piss poor De Niro portrait. I've never been good with likenesses. The others are panel sketches. I can never seem to focus on one thing at a time so I'm already playing with color schemes. If this insomnia keeps up I might actually finish this thing.

The time, and strange interactions with street crime and hospitals, have passed by. Despite all this time, the earnest work and dedication to one of the coolest west coast art show interactions prevails. I present my piece for the Garbage Pail Kids show for Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles.

This piece, like all the rest in the show, is a version of an existing Garbage Pail Kid. In this case, the character is named "Hy Gene". Take a wild guess why.

Come take a peek inside the gross-out shack!

NEW POST

So yeah folks, it's been, once again, a while since I last posted. You know, working a job kinda gets in the way of painting once and a while, and what I paint is usually time consuming. Well well well, I finished two works today and I would love to show them to y'all. ENJOY!

This one is called "First Day at Work." Inspired from the first episode of Mad Men, I don't have any clients yet, so I grab inspiration from my surroundings. Acrylic on Rives BFK.

This one is called "Dancing Isaiah" in tribute to Isaiah Zagar, the main man at my job, and the famous iconic South Street mosaic mural artist. I just thought this would be nice. Acrylic on Rives BFK with silver leaf mirrors aligning the colored line work.

ONE LAST THING FOLKS: I have also made a Facebook fan page, if you want to be posted on more recent work or events. It's only a like away. I think it may be a great way to get yourself out there as well. I know there are a couple of people who are making their own. Aiight y'all, TTFN!

Drifting Parade - the Drawings of Concetta Barbera - BE THERE!!!!!

Concetta Barbera is one of the cornerstone members of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society, helping to curate and organize almost anything we do that is even semi-organized. She was once the co-owner of AMBLE Gallery & Books in Northern Liberties, showing work by artists from all over the globe. Concetta now devotes her time to all things historical - from drawings to old-tymie documents to Philly's libraries. Her artwork combines old fashioned and dreamy aesthetics, using delicate and wistful lines that radiate Concetta's unique charm and sense of humor. The contraptions and characters in Concetta Barbera’s drawings may seem a little dysfunctional, but in a good way – like people and things that can only exist in a little kid’s awesome dream.

If you know Concetta, you’ll see that her work very much mirrors how and who she is. If you don’t know Concetta, come out to the Lost Bar on September 2 and see these drawings and get to know her. The drawings are great, and she is someone worth knowing.

Pierced Pearl

"Pierced Pearl" is my contribution to the "Garbage Pail Kids" show at Gallery 1988 in LA. The show opens this Friday Sept, 2.
