Gallery Show!

Hello Fellow PCS Members,

I will have several new drawings and paintings displayed at the Philadelphia Sketch Club throughout the month of August. Come on out during one of the "Meet the Artists" dates and check out some art and play some 9-ball on the PSC pool table while sipping on some chilly refreshments.

Prehistoric Pee Wee!

Check out my contribution to the "I Know You Are, But What Am I?"A Pee Wee Herman Tribute Art Show! The show is at Gallery 1988: Venice and opens tonight! This has to be my favorite show I've ever done for Gallery 1988 as Pee Wee is pretty much my favorite person ever! I watched the show, saw the movies, had the toys and most recently I got to see him do Pee Wees Playhouse on Broadway in NYC! Amazing, he really hasn't lost a step. So when i was asked to contribute some art to this show I had a really hard time figuring out what i wanted to do because i love everything he does! In the end I choose a scene from Pee Wees Big Adventure that had my 2 favorite things, Pee Wee and Dinosaurs! It will be on sale exclusively from Gallery 1988 at their location in Venice and on their website in a couple of days.

Milton Glaser Embraces Failure

Great video featuring celebrated, (to the point of ubiquity), designer Milton Glaser sharing his thoughts on the notion of a fear of failure. Definitely worth seven minutes of your life.

Spy Vs. Spy Custom

I was asked by the fine folks over at MAD Magazine to customize one of their blank Spy Vs. Spy figures in honor of the 50th anniversary of the characters. This is what I came up with...

My piece, along with custom spies by other great artists, will be on display at DC Comics booth at this year's San Diego Comic Con and also featured in an upcoming issue of MAD. Check out more pics of my "Tin G-Man" esque spy over at MAD's blog The Idiotical

PCS Spotlight - Ed McKeogh's Studio Ed

When Ed McKeogh and his family moved down South, the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society suffered a great loss. Ed is an amazing artist and he and his wife Rebecca were very enthusiastic and active members of all PCS activity, from our self-publishing efforts to BBQ's to charity work. The McKeoghs are and will always be family to us.

Thanks to the the Internet, we can still keep in constant touch with Ed and check out his work. He has been doing the best work I've ever seen him do, and he posts it all on his Studio Ed website. This site is an amazing showcase of Ed's skill and versatility as an artist. Also, he does very unique commission work you should consider if you need a one of a kind gift for someone in your life. PLEASE CLICK HERE to check out STUDIO ED. You won't be disappointed.

Uri Caine at Rex's in Toronto

This is my drawing of Uri Caine from The Rex in toronto.  Incredible music, Mill Street Beer, cool and breezy summer night with the doors of small bar opened and a 10 PM sunset.  And to top it off, I chatted with Uri and he signed my artwork. If you want to see other illustrations from that night, view my blog for the rest of the Trio.  Cheers.

Artificial Dissemination

Heya PCS Gang,

So last Saturday was the Artificial Dissemination show, at Masthead print studio, and here are some photos I took at the event. There were a lot of PCS members involved, so I thought I would share.

Above is the wall I was on, surrounded by awesome artists, including the always impressive work of Alex Eckman-Lawn (directly under my piece) and Jennifer Gin (to the right of Alex's piece). Awesome and intimidating company!

Here is another section of some awesome work, with 2 pieces by James Heimer, show curator and screen printer extraordinaire! (He also hand pulled the prints for my contribution). Also a sweet print by Anthony Pedro!

Above we have another section of amazing prints, with work by poster machine Mike Wohlberg, Jeffro Kilpatrick and a collab with Patch and Melissa Lomax!

Not a bad turn out, eh?

Here is a link to my blog, with some deets on my piece for the show, if anyone is interested.

IMPORTANT!!YOUR ART IN A LOCAL FILM!

Hey guys! Two good friends of mine (the writers of La Morte Sisters) are shooting a low-budget horror film to be set in Philadelphia. They need some art department help, and I told them I would get the word out.

Here's the low-down (per the directors)...

Seeking any generic video game/punk/90's style poster art that we can use in the background of a film shoot at an arcade. Feel free to use copyrighted imagery but not logos or names. Usually just changing a color will do the trick. We're going to put them up as stickers and posters and graffiti.

Must be 300 dpi and no smaller than 6in x 6in please.

Deadline is July 12 at 9 am.

Fwd all art and how you'd like to be credited to Tony Trov: TonyTrov@gmail.com

Thank you for your help.

Please contact Tony Trov and not this post for details. I have nothing to do with production

This is the Kickstarter page that they're using for completion funds.

I will already have art in the film...

These are really great guys! Please help them out. I know you guys have a ton of video game, punk art already on file...So it can't hurt to help :)

Better Off Dead

Dying when you're not really sick is really sick, you know. Really!
- Charles De Mar

This is the first of two pieces I did for this years Crazy 4 Cult 5 show at Gallery 1988. My "How-to Guide to 'Not' Kill Yourself" shows Lane Meyer's and his many failed attemps at offing himself...

"Go That Way Really Fast..."
12" x 18" 3-color screenprint on cougar natural 100# cover
signed and numbered edition of 55
$40.00

"Viddy well, me bruvvers..."

"Ode to Alex"
18" x 24" 3-color screen print
signed and numbered edition of 100; $35

This is my submission for this weekend's Crazy 4 Cult 5 at Gallery 1988: Melrose, taking place this Friday, July 8th. I was inspired by Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange", utilizing familiar items and phrases from the film, and incorporating them into a tattoo inspired design. The finished piece is an 18" x 24" 3-color screen print, with a print run of 100. The print will be for sale at the show on Friday night, and will be made available the next day via the Gallery 1988 website: http://www.nineteeneightyeight.com/

I hope you find it to be "real horrorshow"...

Falcon Beach T-Shirt

I recently partnered up with the Spirit Newspapers to create limited edition North Catholic T-Shirts. Every month or so, we will make a new North Catholic shirt to hnor the school that meant so much to us. If you are a follower of this blog, you probably know that I taught and worked for the school for 7 years, and I went down with the ship. The Spirit was always a really strong supporter of North. My cousin Tommy, one of the co-owners of the paper, is a graduate like myself. We wanted to keep North alive in some small way. During my time at North, I designed most of the shirts, including the annual Thanksgiving Day Game shirt. I figured we can make shirts in short run, no more than 150-200 shirts per design. That way we wouldn't risk losing too much money, and people who bought the shirts would have a limited edition product.

The guys at Awesome Dudes printed this shirt. Joannie's oldest, Brandon, went with me to pick them up. He was nice enough to humor me and model the shirt when we got them back to the Spirit offices.

The shirts are available for sale at the Spirit Newspaper offices (1428 Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125). They are $15 apiece. We only made 150 shirts this time, so if you are interested, you should call: (215) 423-6246.
