Famine's Shadow

This winter I was contacted by horror writer Rachel Deering (Anathema) to do work on a graphic novel. That is still in the works, but in the meantime, I did a short story for a future anthology called Monstrology. Rachel wrote a great 12 page script for me, and being the fan of short stories that I am, I gladly tried my hand at it...

Look What I Found...

So, I have been cleaning up around the studio and unearthed a few copies of PCS Book 2. I have been asked about this book a bunch of times hanging out with some of the newer PCSers. It contains more than 25 of our members. Among them are: Jeffro Kilpatrick, Christine Larsen, Andrew Hart, Melissa Lomax, Jacob Lambert, James PointDujour, Andrew Hoffmann and myself. Catching Up...

It's been a while since i last update here so i thought i'd share a couple of pieces i've worked on recently. First up is a Blue Brothers animated style piece just for fun. Second was a commission made as a companion piece to a Captain America print i did a while back called The Glory Days: Captain America. This time around it was the same idea but with an older Indiana Jones looking back on all his accomplishments. Sorry for the watermark, i just wanted to show a fairly large version so you can see all the detail. And finally, a poster design based on my interpretation of the Walt Disney World attraction; The Enchanted Tiki Room. This one was a gift for my wife on her birthday too!

Quizzo with Rob!

Good friend and proud supporter of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society, Rob LeFevre, of Brave New Worlds Comic Shop in Olde City is now the new king of Quizzo! Rob is now hosting the weekly pub quiz at National Mechanics every Wednesday from 8pm until 10pm.
He stated that "I'll have plenty of questions that have a nerdy bent and there's even a music round for those who are audiologically (I made this word up) inclined."
That sounds like a challenge?
If you are in the area be sure to drop in and test your brain sauce. Also, I think there is a dire need for a PCS Quizzo Team! If you are interested please post here and we can make plans to kick butt next week!

Philadelphia Web-Comic: EAT THE BABIES

Hey, PCS! I met some of you when I first moved here and would go down to Bob & Barbara's for drawing night. It's too bad that that tradition has finally come to an end, because I am finally moving to South Philadelphia in a couple months and it wouldn't be so logistically hard for me anymore. In fact, I'll be living very near the South Philly Tap Room, so if anyone felt like moving a drawing night to there, I'd be down. I'll split a seitan cheese-steak with anyone.

I ran into Jeff on the street recently and we were talking about the web-comic I've been working on, and he told me I should post it up on here.

It's called Eat the Babies, and it's about a walking talking TV that's exploring the world, culture and economics. Soon, one of his good friends, Woody Guthrie, will make a first appearance. Shortly after that, John Maynard Keynes will show up. They are the two most consistently recurring characters, but the nice thing about the comic is there is no story you have to follow. It's just a daily strip of off-kilter, quirky humor. Let me know what you think.

So there's one of my latest strips, above. I've been working on this thing since May. I have just shy of 100 strips already drawn and about 80 of those have already been loaded into my website, coming out one at a time, each Tuesday and Friday. I'm writing this only to say that the drawing gets a lot better. I know, because I've already done it and watched them improve. The first ones are real rough.

If you want to keep an eye on it, though, the easiest way is to subscribe to the feed. Or just keep checking the site, Tuesdays and Fridays (for now).

By the way, are any PCS'ers thinking about driving to SPACE 2011 in Colombus, OH, in a couple weeks. I'm going. It would be cool to share a care.

Anyway, I had lost track of PCS there for a while, but it's cool to see that there's a blog. Now that I am actively cartooning again, I will keep an eye on this space.

Out 2 Dry Art Show, Artwork Needed.

It's baaaack!

That super-fun kewl art show “Out 2 Dry”.
(Please note the wacky word play for our second go-round!)
Here's the deal give us your sketchbook pages, your prints, your unsold masses
and we'll hang 'em all on the walls of Brave New Worlds Comic Shop in Olde City.
No frames, no mattes, just a couple of clothes lines with artwork clipped to them.

Last year's romp proved very successful.
The gang at BNW has offered to forgo commissions on artwork priced $20 or less and paid with cash. (Anything paid for with credit cards they have to take a lil' $umthin' ) We are also setting a price cap no artwork over $50.
So get us your stuff soon.

Here's the vital info
- Type of Art: Sketches, limited edition silkscreen prints, small paintings and inked pieces. (Just no digital prints please)
- Art drop off: Get your stuff over to BNW by Thursday, March 3^rd, 6pm sharp.
- Please label your stuff on the back with the following info:
Name
Title of piece
Price
and number them in order of importance.
(We are hoping to get a bunch of stuff from everyone and we want to sell it all right off the wall. So, we'll be hanging a couple of pieces you drop off at first, then when stuff is sold we'll be replacing it. We'll be sure to hang everyone's #1 and #2 and save their other pieces for later in the show.)

- The Opening will be: Friday March 4^th, 6pm to 9pm.

Lastly, this is an “Open Invitation”. A lot of folks have asked about participating in Philadelphia Cartoonist Society events. So if you're reading this consider yourself invited, this is to be one of many meet n' greets for the PCS in 2011.
(Our only request is no current students participate. Sorry.)

Lineage, a webcomic

Hi PCS pals. Firstly, thanks so much for the invite to contribute to the blog. I've been reading it for a while and I've loved seeing all of your new work, sketches and jam pieces. I'm excited that my first post is about something so close to my heart. I've been quietly working on a comic with writer/bud Michael Taggart, only sharing it with a few close pals to get their opinions/thoughts. Mike and I have collaborated on lots of projects in the past and this is by far our most ambitious. The story revolves around a small cast of characters set in a new sci-fi universe, but reading the comic and checking out the website can describe it better than I can here.

I wanted to keep it under wraps until we had a good amount of backlogged pages, promising I would start making it public in the new year. With the coming of 2011 and 15 pages, we decided now was the time to start going public with our work. The project has allowed me to experiment with new ways of working and there is a lot to look forward to as it evolves. The comic is drawn to fit the screen, and working horizontally has been a new experience itself.. I hope you check out the work and if you like the story so far, check out the website for updates every Wednesday by going to www.lineagecomic.com.
