First solo show! Scott Derby: Illustrations, August 6th at Primer Gallery
Hello all,
I wanted to let everyone here know that I will be having my first solo show of work on Friday, August 6th, 6-9 pm, at the Primer Microgallery in Hatboro, PA as part of Hatboro's "First Friday" event. It will be a collection of both older and newer work, originals and prints, most of which will be available for sale.
It's a great location, and I am honored to have been invited to show my work at this small, but very hip, design firm/microgallery.
Food and drink will be served, so if you're in the area, come on out and say hello.
For more details, check out Primer at http://Primerinc.com
The above piece, done specifically for this show, is basically a self-portrait, circa 1986 or '87, illustrating how music, primarily the punk genre, blew my mind and changed my life...
Girl Talk
Monkey & Bird by Joe Williams and Tina Garceau continues at CO2 Comics! Read the strip here!

Wayne Elliss Memorial T-Shirt 2010
Sadly, I never got to know Wayne Elliss. From what all of his friends tell me, he was a great guy. I can tell when I talk to his best friend Wally that there losing Wayne was a huge loss to many people in Fishtown. So when Wally asked me to design this year's t-shirt for Wayne's Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, I was more than happy to oblige.
Wally had a very clear vision of what he wanted, very simple and direct. I've drawn a lot of t-shirt designs in my life, but I think this one may be my favorite because of its purpose and clarity. It's not often I work quick and simple, and do it for a good cause. I have to say that Wally is one of the better art directors I've worked with. And here I thought he was just my bartender.
The Wayne Elliss Memorial Horseshoe Tournament will be happening this Saturday, July 31 at 11 AM at Shissler Recreation Center. I believe the cost of entry is $20 a person or $40 a team. Food, beer, and good times will be provided. Folks should come out and support this unique memorial event. All proceeds go to Wayne's family's fund for a reward to help catch his killer.

Pictionary is Happenin' Right Now!
For those of you in the know, you are well aware that the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society is holding its monthly Pictionary Game at Bob and Barbara's (16th and South streets.) Every last Monday of the month the PCS hosts one heck of a night; drawin', yellin' and prizes (usually a round of drinks for the lucky winners.) So why aren't you there already? And be sure to clear your calendar for next month. Here are some pics from a previous Pictionary Night!
Tell it to the judge! PCS's own Jeffro Kilpatrick. Photo: Concetta Barbera.
Team "Safeword" is the team to beat! You know a team with jerseys means business. Photo: Concetta Barbera.
Draw like the wind! Its not how well you draw its how fast!!! Photo: Concetta Barbera.

Great Opportunity for PCS memebers!
One of our newer members, Kristin Grossi, has put together an awesome opportunity for some of our gang. She has helped to create the Outdoor Craft Store, a craft show debuting in downtown Swarthmore this September! She wanted me to let ALL of our members know that there is still plenty of room for applications, the previous deadline has been extended. Interested members should just shoot her an email at:

ATC @ U of A!
As many of you know I host Artist Trading Card sessions at the University of the Arts. Artist trading cards are a spin off of the popular gaming cards, like Magic. The only difference is each card is a little work of art that is traded with fellow artists. I have been holding sessions (Thank you Mr. Bob Dix) now for almost a decade now and every session holds new creative surprises.
The images above are some of the cards I traded with my High School students.
Keep your eyes peeled for more ATC sessions being posted on this blog!

Melissa Lomax's Lite Brite Art Show!
Our own Melissa Lomax will be displaying her crayon works on paper on Friday, July 30th. As someone that shares a studio with Lomax I can honestly say she has amassed more than 20 pieces that would make Mr. Crayola blush! I'll be posting a few more pieces from the show as the date draws closer. Hope to see you there!

Stuff to Look Forward To
For those of you in the Cali area (and those of you who plan to drop by), fellow Philly artist Christine Larsen will be at Comic-Con promoting the "Shrek" comic book she drew as well as milling about and looking cool. I hear-tell this Comic-con thing is gonna be big. Here's her info via The Autumn Society:
Also, Scion is sponsoring an exhibition of Ed Emberley artwork. Like many artists, Mr. Emberley's drawing books were my introduction to drawing tigers, witches and purple people thingies. Info is available here: http://www.scion.com/space/index.html
Wish I could be there but I can't. If anyone takes pictures, drop me a line and send a few my way. Graci!

Goodbye Mr. Pekar.
I just found out this afternoon that Harvey Pekar passed away early this morning. I have a handful of heroes in art and comics and Harvey was at the top of the list. His stories, particularly "Our Cancer Year", changed my life and quite honestly helped save it. That book inspired me to keep a sketchbook throughout my treatments for cancer. Other than visits from friends and family my sketchbook was the light at the end of the tunnel. I owe that to Harvey and his wonderful wife Joyce Brabner. If you have read any of Mr. Pekar's comics, or seen the movie inspired by his life, you feel like you know him, intimately. He was recently experiencing another wave of interest since the release of his webcomic "The Pekar Project."
Today I feel like I lost my cool, curmudgeon of an uncle that wrote amazing comics. Harvey was a pioneer of the medium of comics and his presence will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and daughter.
The drawing above is by Jeffro Kilpatrick. Jeff drew this at a lecture Harvey gave about the power of the medium of comics. It hangs in my studio as an inspiration and a reminder.

Interview with Craig Yoe
This interview from Print magazine with cartoonist/designer Craig Yoe had me in stitches. Very much worth the read.

New T-Shirt Design!
I finished up one of my first designs for Evil Brand Clothing. Thought I would share.
It started with the sketch above, then I inked it a popped in some digital colors.
I was really proud of the finished shirt, they printed it really big! Side note: Does this mean I am cool now that guys with mohawks wear clothes with my art on them?
