Tony Auth Awarded HDFA at UArts Commencement

On May 17, PCS member Christian “Patch” Patchell had the honor of introducing legendary Philadelphia editorial cartoonist Tony Auth at the University of the Arts 134^th Commencement Ceremony. Auth was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University.

If you let the video run after that, you can also hear Neil Gaiman’s commencement address to the class of 2012. Gaiman was also presented with an HDFA from UArts.

The newTRADITIONALISTS Art Show and Opening.

 

Featuring our own Paul Palcko, Kyle Margiotta and Anthony Pedro.

This show has been about two years in the making. I jokingly said a while back that I would love to see a show with these guys and we could call it “The serious side of the PCS.” That thought never went away, I love what Kyle, Paul and Anthony do and I wanted the proper venue to really highlight their talents. Fortune smiled upon me when my good friends over at NicholsBerg Gallery in Chestnut Hill asked if I had any ideas for art shows. Flash forward to right now and I have just sent out about thirty press releases, posted all over the place and am eagerly awaiting the postcard you see above.

The name might have changed but I am honored to be curating what I still think of as the serious side of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society.

I hope everyone in the group can make it out on May 5^th for the opening reception, fittingly scheduled on Free Comic Book Day.

So the wonderful folks over at Kathy Davis are not only carrying my book in their online store they are promoting it as well. Take a look at this e-mail that just went out this week! Look What I Found...

So, I have been cleaning up around the studio and unearthed a few copies of PCS Book 2. I have been asked about this book a bunch of times hanging out with some of the newer PCSers. It contains more than 25 of our members. Among them are: Jeffro Kilpatrick, Christine Larsen, Andrew Hart, Melissa Lomax, Jacob Lambert, James PointDujour, Andrew Hoffmann and myself. Extra! Extra!

Right before the Holidays hit full swing I received and e-mail requesting a political cartoon featuring Philadelphia’s first female Sheriff that ran in the Daily News. You can read more about it at my blog.

C’mon up to the Tree House.

As we speak Melissa and I are putting together our very first collaborative art show. Our good friends over at the Nichols Berg Gallery have graciously given us the second floor of their showroom and we have been collecting and making work for the last six months. At the beginning of November Melissa pulled several of our pieces and spread them out all over our living room (at the Tree House). We both said aloud “Why the heck did we wait this long to do this?”
The opening is this Friday, December 2nd from 6pm to 9pm. Lomax and I will be on hand whoop it up and enjoy the live music. Hope to see you there!
P.S. – I have a ton of pics from my recent book signing at Nichols Berg. I am going through them now for a future post and in preparation for the delivery of the books. I cannot thank everyone enough for all their support -Thank You.

New Monster Monday.

Artist Trading Cards at the Free Library.

Yours truly will be hosting an Artist Trading Card session at the Free Library of Philadelphia as part of their One Book One Philadelphia event.The session starts at 3:30pm and should go to around 6pm. It is a free event and open to all ages. I am hoping to have a few of my fellow Philadelphia Cartoonist Society members on hand to make and trade cards along with all that attend.
Making Artist Trading Cards is always a lot of fun and you get to walk away with some really kewl artwork at the end of the session. Hope to see you there.

Sketchbook Sunday 02: Empire Strikes Back.

As some of you might have noticed Kyle has been posting sketches each Sunday. I love this idea but have been remiss in my broseph duties and have not posted as frequently as I would have liked. You can see Kyle's last post here and see mine here.

So here is the deal, I am throwing down the gauntlet and opening up “Sketchbook Sunday” to everyone that posts on the PCS blog.

Back in the day we would hang out at Bob and Barbara's Lounge to listen to Nate Wiley and the Crowd Pleasers, toss a couple back and do some drawing. Many a Sunday night I would thumb through the sketchbooks of Jeff Kilpatrick, Kyle Margiotta, Andrew Hoffmann, Bob Dix and any of the other members that might be on hand.

The blog would be an awesome place to pick up where we left off with those nights at B&B's. Post your sketches, roughs, ideas, whatever.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone has been up to. Cheers!

Art of Healing

As many of you know I am a cancer survivor, now living 3 years cancer free. I am pretty outspoken about it and as a result of my lectures on sketchbooks with the ESLI school I was invited to participate in a wonderful exhibition at the University of the Arts; ‘The Art of Healing’. This is one that is near and dear to my heart. I kept a sketchbook everyday of treatments; I underwent both chemotherapy and radiation at the same time. So for an hour everyday I drew in a book that quickly became dubbed “My Cancer Sketchbook”.

With the aid of that wonderful book I was able to combat my disease. Also, as I entered into recovery I was able to bring it into the classroom and stress the importance of keeping a sketchbook to students of all ages.
So when asked to contribute to this art show I naturally went to the pages of “My Cancer Sketchbook”.
This three (3) color silk-screened print was made possible with the expertise of James Heimer whom I collaborated with on my “Intestinal Fortitude” print. This print was done exclusively for this event and in conjunction with grants I received to design and publish “My Cancer Sketchbook”. I will post more on that project in the following months.
This page has always reminded me of running back and forth to the hospital for therapy and visits to the doctor. Throughout that daily chaos I don’t know if I would have even noticed if King Kong had invaded our skyline.

Show Info:
The opening reception will be this Friday, November, 12^th at the University of the Arts located at 333 South Broad Street in Philadelphia.
The Opening Reception from 3 to 5pm in the President’s Office
and will continue in the student-run Gallery One space located
on the lower level of the Hamilton Hall from 5 to 7pm.
This art exhibition will feature the work of students and faculty “embracing the powerful connection between art and healing.”

Halloween Tradition.

Halloween is a big deal in the Lomax/Patch abode. All things spooky and hallowed have a special place in our hearts. One of our favorite traditions, right up there with the carving of the pumpkin and the donning of the costumes, is making Trick or Treat bags for the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CcTC). With our allegiance to the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society we have participated in creating bags for five years of this decade long tradition. We both got involved through the good graces (and mileage on his car) of one Jeffro Kilpatrick who has lent both his pencil and heart to the Crisis Center for the better part of 12 years.

This year, with the PCS being busier than ever, we were unable to get together for the customary pizza and beer to crank out our annual 100 Halloween Bags. But traditions must be maintained even in the eye of a deadline so Melissa and I set up shop in our studio to create our contribution, all the while listening to some Johnny Cash and Tom Waits.
This year we collaborated on bags. Yours truly had the task of making some spooky potato stamps and Lomax had type duty. Her elegant script has marked many a greeting card and is way nicer than my own. And what goody bag would be complete without some GLITTER?!?
These bags will be part of the 2010 Spooktacular, sponsored by Charette, the AIA Philadelphia and students of CHAD (Charter High School for Architecture & Design). The Spooktacular event provides kids at the CcTC (The Children s Crisis Treatment Center) a safe place to trick or treat and enjoy the happiest of Halloweens.
