The newTRADITIONALISTS Art Show and Opening.

 

Featuring our own Paul Palcko, Kyle Margiotta and Anthony Pedro.

This show has been about two years in the making. I jokingly said a while back that I would love to see a show with these guys and we could call it “The serious side of the PCS.” That thought never went away, I love what Kyle, Paul and Anthony do and I wanted the proper venue to really highlight their talents. Fortune smiled upon me when my good friends over at NicholsBerg Gallery in Chestnut Hill asked if I had any ideas for art shows. Flash forward to right now and I have just sent out about thirty press releases, posted all over the place and am eagerly awaiting the postcard you see above.

The name might have changed but I am honored to be curating what I still think of as the serious side of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society.

I hope everyone in the group can make it out on May 5^th for the opening reception, fittingly scheduled on Free Comic Book Day.

Dennis Jones - Art Show This Month at Starbucks

If you have ever been anywhere near the Starbucks at Broad & Pine on the University of the Arts campus, you have probably seen Dennis, the guy sitting in the front window painting, drawing, designing, and playing the key-tar. You may have wondered, "What is that guy's story?"

You should come out Friday, October 7 and find out. Dennis Jones of Silver Back Productions will have a collection of work hanging all month in the Starbucks he treats as his studio and office. You might think he's an unusual character until you get to know him. But the truth is that Dennis is just a straight-ahead working artist. Most of the work he does at that coffee shop is for hire. He is constantly painting portraits of the Phillies, drawing dogs, and designing logos. Dennis attended UArts back in the 70's when it was called the Philadelphia College of Art. He was a sign painter for years, a t-shirt designer, and even designed a jacket years ago for Janet Jackson.

I asked why he always does his work at the Starbucks. He didn't really have an answer for me. He just said he stopped in there one day, saw they had an outlet to plug in his phone charger and key-tar, and it evolved into what it is today. Dennis is at that Starbucks at Broad and Pine almost every day. His plate is always full of work.

Dennis' opening reception is around 5 PM on Friday, October 7, 2011, and his work will hang all month. Make sure you stop by, see some great work, and talk to the man.

Drifting Parade - the Drawings of Concetta Barbera - BE THERE!!!!!

Concetta Barbera is one of the cornerstone members of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society, helping to curate and organize almost anything we do that is even semi-organized. She was once the co-owner of AMBLE Gallery & Books in Northern Liberties, showing work by artists from all over the globe. Concetta now devotes her time to all things historical - from drawings to old-tymie documents to Philly's libraries. Her artwork combines old fashioned and dreamy aesthetics, using delicate and wistful lines that radiate Concetta's unique charm and sense of humor. The contraptions and characters in Concetta Barbera’s drawings may seem a little dysfunctional, but in a good way – like people and things that can only exist in a little kid’s awesome dream.

If you know Concetta, you’ll see that her work very much mirrors how and who she is. If you don’t know Concetta, come out to the Lost Bar on September 2 and see these drawings and get to know her. The drawings are great, and she is someone worth knowing.

Jenny Kanzler - First Friday Art Shows

Local artist Jenny Kanzler will have paintings hanging in two spots around Philly this month. If you are out and about tonight, please stop by the LaPelle Gallery in Old City (122 N. 3rd Street), where Jenny has a few new paintings. You can also swing by the Mausoleum of Contemporary Art at 12th and Spring Garden to see one of her pieces on display at the Mausolem in PhilaMythos, curated by Alex Stanton.

Drawn to Letters Art Show - August 2011

An art show that features both the characters of the Alphabet and the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society.
August 5^th to August 31^st
Opening Reception August 5^th from 6pm to 9pm

The 26 characters of the English Alphabet are what we rely on to communicate in our society. Whether text message, e-mail, signage, books, or your Facebook status it boils down to knowing your P’s and Q’s.The Philadelphia Cartoonist Society is out to prove that these emblems of communication are built upon, well, character. Each member of the PCS will be interpreting one letter from the Alphabet to be on display at Brave New Worlds Comic Shop this August. From paintings to pen and ink, cartoons to chiaroscuro, all the art will be priced to sell for those who are graphically inclined. From images to icons this exhibition will be one you won’t want to miss.

Dre Time Art Show at The Black n Brew - June 2011

Local Cartoon hustler, Illustrator, and Philly Comix Jammist Dretime will be showing off her 2011 collection of work at the Black n Brew (1523 East Passyunk Avenue in South Philly) for the entire month of June. Make sure you stop by and feast your eyes.

HEY ALL!

If you live in the Philadelphia area and get down with the cartooning/comicking, I am the juror (in good standing!) for the Philadelphia Sketch Club's ART OF SEQUENTIAL gallery exhibition. Mike Manley and I were involved with the inaugural show a few summers ago and it was a great time. You should submit!

And if you don't know what the Sketch Club is, For Shame! It is only the oldest continuing artist's organization, which housed some of the greats behind its doors, like Thomas Eakins, N.C. Wyeth, Benton Spruance and on. This is no rinky-dink hole in the wall, and I'm honored to be a welcomed member.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club has extended the deadline for entries into the Art of Sequential Exhibition. You can submit work on line at www.sketchclub.slideroom.com  3 entries for $30.

The deadline for submission is Friday, June 3rd at midnite!
Categories are: Sequential Comic Page, Sequential  one- page story or comic strip, Cover Art, and Character Pin Up Art.

Artists reception and awards will be on Sunday June 12 from 2 to 4 PM , with the awards presented at 3 PM.

You can hand deliver work to The Philadelphia Sketch Club on Saturday June 4th between 1 and 4 PM. Single walk in entries will still be accepted on Saturday for $15 each.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club is located at 235 S. Camac Street  in Philadelphia. The work will hang in the Sketch Club upstairs gallery  through June 12th .

Out 2 dry Art Show Opening Reception TONIGHT!

Thanks to everyone that participated. A very special thanks to the gang at Brave New Worlds and the nice words they posted here.
The turnout for this was overwhelming. I think we hung more than a hundred pieces? My apologies but we ran out of space. It's a wonderful show and we will be updating it regularly. So be sure to check it out.

Rain Gives Rise

This picture shows a Thalassomedon feeding on fish in the Cretaceous Sea while Ancient Ammonites drift by. The Thalassomedon is a type of plesiosaur, that had a 20ft long neck. Scientists think it may have used this long neck as stealth to sneak its way into schools of fish while its body could remain hidden below. They also think it may have fed like a crocodile or alligator thrashing its head from side to side.

Ammonites are one of the best ways scientists can date the ancient seas. Their shells were easily fossilized, and flourished through out the age of Dinosaurs. They grew pretty big sometimes with shells 3ft across. They looked like squid with a beak for eating other cephalopods.

These pictures will both be shown in The Age of Reptiles show, premiering at Paradigm Gallery Tomorrow evening. It is a show I curated and will feature many of your fellow PCS brethren. Sam Heimer, James Heimer, Paul Palcko, and Jeffro amongst others. I hope to have your support.

Out 2 Dry Art Show, Artwork Needed.

It's baaaack!

That super-fun kewl art show “Out 2 Dry”.
(Please note the wacky word play for our second go-round!)
Here's the deal give us your sketchbook pages, your prints, your unsold masses
and we'll hang 'em all on the walls of Brave New Worlds Comic Shop in Olde City.
No frames, no mattes, just a couple of clothes lines with artwork clipped to them.

Last year's romp proved very successful.
The gang at BNW has offered to forgo commissions on artwork priced $20 or less and paid with cash. (Anything paid for with credit cards they have to take a lil' $umthin' ) We are also setting a price cap no artwork over $50.
So get us your stuff soon.

- Type of Art: Sketches, limited edition silkscreen prints, small paintings and inked pieces. (Just no digital prints please)
- Art drop off: Get your stuff over to BNW by Thursday, March 3^rd, 6pm sharp.
- Please label your stuff on the back with the following info:
Name
Title of piece
Price
and number them in order of importance.
(We are hoping to get a bunch of stuff from everyone and we want to sell it all right off the wall. So, we'll be hanging a couple of pieces you drop off at first, then when stuff is sold we'll be replacing it. We'll be sure to hang everyone's #1 and #2 and save their other pieces for later in the show.)

- The Opening will be: Friday March 4^th, 6pm to 9pm.

Lastly, this is an “Open Invitation”. A lot of folks have asked about participating in Philadelphia Cartoonist Society events. So if you're reading this consider yourself invited, this is to be one of many meet n' greets for the PCS in 2011.
(Our only request is no current students participate. Sorry.)
