FREE COMICS!

FREE COMICS!!!

In order to motivate me to do more of my own comics, I have started a web comic called Short Stories which will include the stories from my book in addition to new material that I haven't gotten around to finishing. The entirety of Cup-O-Noodles is up there now. Once I have caught up with the short stories I have on file (posting 1 per week), I will be posting complete stories once/month for the foreseeable future. This is a good way to motivate me to keep writing and finishing my own work in addition to the comics I am illustrating by other folks.

It would mean so much if you would go and subscribe! And even more if you could tweet it and facepage it and spread the word (@larsenproject)! Free comics! The next story will be up by Friday.

One day I hope to have enough to collect them all into one gigantic book...

Jeffro's ArtUnleashed 2012 Submission - "How Deep is the Ocean?"

If you were to do a search of the word "Mermaid" on this blog, you would see that I have done several variations on this theme and image. This actual image is a recreation of an envelope I drew for Joannie back in 2009, except much much larger. This piece is 14"x11". I used different colored inks, markers, and colored pencils on 98lb Mix Media paper.

Initially, the seed of this idea came from a sketchbook drawing by one of my favorite artists - Heinrich Kley. I can't find a good version of the image online, but click here to see a small one. The idea of the deep sea diver fascinates me. Something about walking the floor of the murky depths, being alone out there, but still being tied to home. It's romantic to me.

Once again, music has played a part in my work here. This piece is entitled, "How Deep is the Ocean", named after an Irving Berlin song. I love Billie Holiday's version. But lately, I have been loving the version by Doc Cheatham and Nicholas Payton. I am pretty sure that album was Doc Cheatham's last. He was so awesome.

Anyway, this piece will be on display and for sale at this year's ArtUnleashed event, a fundraiser for the University of the Arts. I have been teaching at UArts in different capacities for several years now. I have also been working full-time for the past year in the Advancement office, working to raise funds for the school. It was an honor to be asked to be in the show. My work will hang on the walls with Arnie Roth. There will also bee a nice group of friends participating in the show, like Chris Patchell, Kyle Margiotta, Christine Larsen, and Paul Palcko. I am really looking forward to the event.

Famine's Shadow

This winter I was contacted by horror writer Rachel Deering (Anathema) to do work on a graphic novel. That is still in the works, but in the meantime, I did a short story for a future anthology called Monstrology. Rachel wrote a great 12 page script for me, and being the fan of short stories that I am, I gladly tried my hand at it...

Look What I Found...

So, I have been cleaning up around the studio and unearthed a few copies of PCS Book 2. I have been asked about this book a bunch of times hanging out with some of the newer PCSers. It contains more than 25 of our members. Among them are: Jeffro Kilpatrick, Christine Larsen, Andrew Hart, Melissa Lomax, Jacob Lambert, James PointDujour, Andrew Hoffmann and myself. I have six copies for sale up on my store. Hey, if you are a local yokel shoot me an e-mail and I just put her in yer hands and we can save on the postage. Click on the link below to check it out.

Lanterns

Last week was a light week for me as I waited on approvals and scripts to come in, so I decided to work on a little something that's been sitting in my sketchbook for a while now...

Hobo Day Photos - 2011

I hope that some of the folks' drawings will pop up here soon. In the meantimes, we will have to enjoy the memories of these Iphone photos Sam Heimer took. Thanks to all the folks who came out. Mostly it was awesome mixing it up, drawing, and BBQing with a bunch of great people. Thanx, Chris Stevens and John and all the gracious folks at Locust Moon out in Wild West Philly. Unfortunately, we witnessed two very sad moments on the el train, but it didn't seem to sour the overall spirit of the day and the crew. It was a very unique and lively experience to say the least. We were kinda like a peaceful version of "The Warriors" (except nobody was wasting nobody).

Rob, Mandy, and "Hoff" - hard at work hobos.

My main man Chris - in spite of the fact that his headphones had devil horns on them, I am pretty sure I heard Barry Manilow coming from his Ipod. You can see some of Chris' work here: http://chrisdowling.deviantart.com/.

BBQing back at Locust Moon's "Hobo Jungle". I was showing Chris Stevens my secret recipe to opening a bag of ice.

Eamon's hand is quicker than the eye. And James tries to hide his knobby knees.

Larsen sometimes gets very angry and frustrated because she was born with a pixelated right hand.

Unveiled

In an attempt to do more editorial-type work, I have been keeping an eye out for stories in the news that I find particularly interesting...France's new Anti Veil Law is one of them.

If you're interested in seeing the story, here's CBS's take. I caught it Monday night on NBC's Nightly News, but couldn't find the clip.

One Set of Horns

I was recently asked by Ape Entertainment to do the back up stories for their upcoming Kung Fu Panda 2 books. This is page 4 in that 8 page story.

See the coloring process for this page at my blog...

I'm finishing up the second and third back up story now. They will be showing up in the upcoming comics, to be released with the movie.
